Burn Victims
Fire victims often suffer from serious burns that leave disfiguring scars and may even cause permanent disability. There are a range of burn injury types, from sunburns to chemical burns. Burns are categorized by their severity, the layers of skin that are damaged, and the type of treatment the burns require.
Burn Injuries
Burns are classified into three types:
- First degree. These burns affect only the outer layer of the skin and can heal without medical attention. A non-blistering sunburn is an example of a first degree burn.
- Second degree. These burns involve both the outer and inner layers of the skin and have a moist appearance. They often form blisters. The most serious second degree burns can involve all layers of the skin.
- Third degree. These are the most severe types of burns and may require extensive medical treatment to heal. They involve all layers of the skin and may even damage structures beneath the skin, such as muscles, bones, and organs. The skin of third degree burns loses all elasticity and is damaged to the point that the pain sensors at the injury site have been destroyed.
Serious second degree and third degree burns may require serious medical treatment such as skin grafts, in which a layer of skin is removed from an uninjured site of the body and replaced on the burn to help it heal.
