The state of Florida has decided to discontinue its policy of inspection in nursing homes, among other venues, due to budget cuts.
According to The Palm Beach Post, “A bill signed by Gov. Charlie Crist that took effect Thursday eliminated inspections at places that serve people who are most at-risk for foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses linked to these facilities have sickened hundreds of Floridians in at least 15 separate outbreaks since 1995.”
The state’s quarterly inspections were ended at nursing homes, hospitals, and day cares, but will continue at prisons. There is serious concern that the state is neglecting those who are most susceptible and more-seriously harmed by food illness.
