Maggots found in nursing home patient’s eye socket

Posted on September 24th, 2010 No Comments

Recently, doctors have allegedly found maggots in the eye socket of a nursing home patient’s eye.

After the maggots were reportedly found the nursing home denied any responsibility for the discovery. Officials from the nursing home are claiming that the nursing home resident failed to listen to guidelines set by nursing home staff and it resulted in the serious infection of the resident.

The Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Children and Family Services have both investigated the incident.

12-year old Teagan Marti of Parkland, Florida was injured after falling 100 feet from a ride at a Wisconsin Dells amusement park.  An employee at Extreme World released Marti from a 100-foot tall platform from the ride before the safety net was secured.  Marti fell to the ground instead of onto the net.

Marti was flown to Madison Hospital in Florida to be treated for serious injuries.  She was later transferred to a hospital in Miami.  Doctors fear that she may be paralyzed from the accident.

The ride’s operator has been charged with first-degree reckless injury and will go to court at a later date.  First-degree reckless injury is a felony charge and is punishable by up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Teagan and her family during her recovery.

Coral Springs woman wins $500,000 settlement from city

Posted on August 24th, 2010 No Comments

The Coral Springs city commission is expected to approve a settlement today, Tuesday the 24th, for a personal injury award of around $500,000 filed by an ex-city employee.

In the lawsuit, the ex-employee maintains that in June, 2006, as a civilian member of the police department, she slipped while cleaning equipment with a hose. She fell backward and suffered permanent injures.

The settlement, which includes attorney’s fees and compensation for the ex-employee’s surgeries and prescription drugs, is described by Susan Grant, director of human resources and finance, as “in the best interests of the city.”

The city will pay about $300,000 while its insurer will pick up the rest. If the case went to trial, analysts have warned the city that an additional $55,000 would likely be tacked on.

Coral Springs Crash Leaves Truck Atop Retaining Wall

Posted on August 20th, 2010 No Comments

Two people sustained minor injuries in a dramatic crash on Interstate 595 on Wednesday.

According to officials with the Florida Highway Patrol, 18 year-old Craig J. Whitfield was traveling in the westbound lanes of I-595, just east of State Road 7, shortly before 5:30 p.m when the accident occurred. Police say Whitfield was driving a 1996 Chevy pickup truck when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 2005 Honda Civic. The force of the impact caused the Chevy to spin across the westbound lanes of the highway, overturn, and land on top of a retaining wall and a blue 1995 Ford Mustang driven by 29 year-old Danielle Shippee, of Davie.

Traffic was backed up along the interstate as response crews worked to clear the accident and motorists slowed to gawk at the upside down pickup truck teetering on the retaining wall, just feet from a plunge into a thicket of trees and mangroves in the ravine below.

Thankfully nobody involved in the crash was seriously injured. All too often, accidents like these can result in serious personal injury. Investigation Still Waiting to Hear From Dolphins’ Hartline

Posted on July 26th, 2010 No Comments

The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating an accident that happened three weeks ago. Around 4:30 in the morning, a truck crashed into an abandoned vehicle east of Interstate 95. The truck, which had to be towed away, was registered to Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline.

Hartline still has not spoken to police about the matter. Authorities say they went to Hartline’s residence after the crash and were told he was not there. He has since made several media appearances but continues to evade answering questions for the Florida Highway Patrol.

Police say the investigation won’t go much further if Hartline refuses to speak to them.

CPSC Votes for Mandatory Crib Standards

Posted on July 19th, 2010 No Comments

New York Mother Michele Witte knows all too well the dangers of the drop-side crib. She found her ten-month-old dead the morning of December 12, 1997. According to CNN, “Tyler, [Witte's son], had gotten his neck stuck in a gap between the side rail and headboard created when a single screw had become loose.”

Witte became an advocate for crib safety and is finally starting to see results. According to CNN, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to up crib standards. CNN reports that, this would, “essentially would ban the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs.”

Witte says she longs for the time when all of her children have outgrown the crib. CNN writes that, “between November 2007 and April of this year, there were 36 deaths associated with crib structural problems”

State of Florida to Discontinue Food Safety Inspections in Nursing Homes

Posted on July 12th, 2010 No Comments

The state of Florida has decided to discontinue its policy of inspection in nursing homes, among other venues, due to budget cuts.

According to The Palm Beach Post, “A bill signed by Gov. Charlie Crist that took effect Thursday eliminated inspections at places that serve people who are most at-risk for foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses linked to these facilities have sickened hundreds of Floridians in at least 15 separate outbreaks since 1995.”

The state’s quarterly inspections were ended at nursing homes, hospitals, and day cares, but will continue at prisons. There is serious concern that the state is neglecting those who are most susceptible and more-seriously harmed by food illness.

Bad nursing home food or malnutrition can make you seriously ill. If you or someone you know has suffered as a result of negligence or poor treatment at a nursing home, contact the Coral Springs nursing home negligence lawyers at The Law Offices of Eric G. Canter by dialing 866-529-0022.
