Woman injured by driver on cell phone

A 72-year-old woman from Barefoot Bay was injured in a car accident on Monday when her car was struck by another vehicle.

The 17-year-old driver of the other vehicle was talking on his cell phone around 12:50 p.m. when he crashed his Jeep Wrangler into the woman’s car. The accident pushed the car into a drainage canal at the southwest corner of Indian River Blvd and 45th St and knocked the Jeep onto its side. The woman is currently in critical but stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

One injured in I-95 crash; Driver jumps from interchange

After causing a crash on I-95 that left one person injured on Tuesday night, a driver jumped 45 feet off the side of an interchange.

The 23-year-old man was driving south at high speeds along I-5 when he lost control of the vehicle. The 1993 Chevy crashed into the side of a 2004 BMW, rear-ended a 2001 Mazda, and hit a concrete center divider near Belvedere Road. After the incident, the man exited his vehicle, fled from the scene, and jumped over the side of the freeway. The man was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center and is in critical condition.

The driver of the BMW, a Boca Raton man, suffered from minor injuries.

Drunk driver involved in fatal hit-and-run turns himself in

A Coral Springs man was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with a fatal DUI hit-and-run after turning himself in, Coral Springs police report.

The man was charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI serious bodily injury and driving with a suspended license. Authorities say he struck another car, ejecting that car’s driver from the vehicle and killing him. The drunk driver then left the scene of the accident.

Police caught up with him later, and sobriety tests showed his blood alcohol level to be .229.

He will remain in jail until his trial.

Coral Springs woman killed in crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Coral Springs woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Florida’s Turnpike last Thursday night.

The accident occurred around 11:15 PM, as the 38-year-old woman was pulled over on the northbound emergency shoulder after having car problems. A 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck rear-ended the woman’s vehicle, killing her instantly.

The driver of the truck was taken to North Broward Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

Police are still investigating and no charges have yet been brought.

Two children struck by truck

A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were both struck Wednesday night by a car while trying to cross the intersection of Atlantic Blvd. and Lakeview Dr., according to police.

The accident occurred around 8 PM. The 12-year-old girl was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center in critical condition with sever head injuries while the boy was taken by ground to the same hospital in stable condition.

Authorities say that the 46-year-old woman driving the truck that struck the children stopped at the scene and tried to help the children. According to witnesses, the woman was not speeding and had a green light at the intersection.

Police are still investigating.

Police identify victim of hit-and-run

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the 62-year-old woman who was killed in a hit-and-run accident last Wednesday as a Fort Lauderdale woman.

The accident occurred on Wednesday on Interstate 595. The woman was walking in the westbound lanes of I-595 west of Interstate 95 when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Police were unable to ascertain her identity as she was not carrying any form of identification.

The woman’s daughter had reported her mother missing on Tuesday evening after she did not return home and police were eventually able to use that alert to identify the woman. The woman suffered from a history of medical ailments including dementia and seizures.

Police are still searching for the driver responsible for the hit-and-run.

Two-vehicle collision injures two

According to Coral Springs police, a two-vehicle collision led to a chain-reaction that eventually involved five vehicles.

The accident occurred at 5:40 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Riverside Drive and North University Drive, said Lt. Joe McHugh of the Coral Springs Police.

“One car hit one, and the others hit each other,” McHugh said. “There were minor injuries, and just two people were transported.”

One killed and five injured in van crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a van full of day laborers crashed on southbound Interstate 95 this morning, killing one and injuring five others. Several lanes of traffic had to be closed, but have now reopened.

Authorities say that the van was southbound in a construction zone around 6:40 AM immediately south of Indiantown Road exit and before Donald Ross Road. The driver lost control and the van careened off the road before smashing into a temporary retaining wall separating the road and median.
Two wheels on the van had been blown out but police are unsure if this occurred before or after the accident.

One man was killed in the crash, while five others were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Hit-and-run driver knocks out power for entire neighborhood

According to authorities, an unknown South Florida driver knocked out power to a residential area when he struck a power box on Monday.

The incident occurred around 5:30 PM, at the intersection of Wyndham Lakes Boulevard and 12th Avenue. An accident investigator was responding to reports of a three-vehicle crash. One of the drivers, after a few moments of questioning, pushed the investigator away and fled the scene, striking the power box in the process.

This resulted in the loss of power to around 3000 people.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to North Broward Medical Center. When he has recovered he will be charged with fleeing and eluding, battery on an accident investigator, and leaving the scene of an accident.

One killed, one injured in single-car accident

An 18-year-old man was killed and a 17-year-old girl was injured in a car accident this Monday.

Coral Springs police say that the accident occurred just before 4 PM at the intersection of Royal Palm Boulevard and Coral Springs Drive.

Fire rescue crews arriving at the scene found the car smashed into a tree. The 18-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while the 17-year-old was rushed to North Broward Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
