Recognizing and protecting elderly from Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing Home Abuse Lawyers Fort Lauderdale

Elderly people who have become unable to take care of themselves often stay at nursing homes. This environment typically facilitates interaction with other elderly people as well as help from the staff.  Unfortunately, not all nursing homes provide proper care that meets high standards of quality. In fact, some nursing homes have been linked to terrible cases of abuse, including malnutrition.

Sadly, older persons in nursing homes are often unable to report or fight against abuse. When someone preys on the elderly, it can lead to further physical and mental harm.  Negligence and mistreatment of the elderly is intolerable and should not be over looked.  If someone you love has been abused in a nursing home, you should contact a Fort Lauderdale Personal Injury Attorney from the Law Offices of Eric G. Canter, P.A., at 866-529-0022.

Malnutrition Abuse

Most people think of abuse as physical beatings or emotional tear-downs. However, controlling and restricting a person’s diet and nutritional intake can also lead to physical weakness and emotional suffering. This cruel manipulation can quickly become deadly.

Malnutrition Dangers

Everyone needs certain vitamins and minerals to function and stay healthy. This is especially important for the elderly, who can lose their appetites easily. However, as the body ages, it is imperative that older people receive just as many nutrients as before. If this need is unfulfilled, a person can face dangerous consequences of malnutrition, including:

  • Kidney failure
  • Respiratory distress
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Brain damage
  • Death

Don’t let your elderly loved one be a victim.  If you are aware of malnutrition at your elderly loved one’s nursing home, you should fight back against this cruel negligence immediately. Fort Lauderdale Personal Injury Attorney

Maggots found in nursing home patient’s eye socket

Posted on September 24th, 2010 No Comments

Recently, doctors have allegedly found maggots in the eye socket of a nursing home patient’s eye.

After the maggots were reportedly found the nursing home denied any responsibility for the discovery. Officials from the nursing home are claiming that the nursing home resident failed to listen to guidelines set by nursing home staff and it resulted in the serious infection of the resident.

The Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Children and Family Services have both investigated the incident.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of elder care or nursing home abuse, contact the Coral Springs nursing home abuse lawyers of the law offices of Eric G. Canter, P.A. by calling 866-529-0022 today.

State of Florida to Discontinue Food Safety Inspections in Nursing Homes

Posted on July 12th, 2010 No Comments

The state of Florida has decided to discontinue its policy of inspection in nursing homes, among other venues, due to budget cuts.

According to The Palm Beach Post, “A bill signed by Gov. Charlie Crist that took effect Thursday eliminated inspections at places that serve people who are most at-risk for foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses linked to these facilities have sickened hundreds of Floridians in at least 15 separate outbreaks since 1995.”

The state’s quarterly inspections were ended at nursing homes, hospitals, and day cares, but will continue at prisons. There is serious concern that the state is neglecting those who are most susceptible and more-seriously harmed by food illness.

Bad nursing home food or malnutrition can make you seriously ill. If you or someone you know has suffered as a result of negligence or poor treatment at a nursing home, contact the Coral Springs nursing home negligence lawyers at The Law Offices of Eric G. Canter by dialing 866-529-0022.
