New York Mother Michele Witte knows all too well the dangers of the drop-side crib. She found her ten-month-old dead the morning of December 12, 1997. According to CNN, “Tyler, [Witte's son], had gotten his neck stuck in a gap between the side rail and headboard created when a single screw had become loose.”
Witte became an advocate for crib safety and is finally starting to see results. According to CNN, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to up crib standards. CNN reports that, this would, “essentially would ban the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs.”
Witte says she longs for the time when all of her children have outgrown the crib. CNN writes that, “between November 2007 and April of this year, there were 36 deaths associated with crib structural problems”
